QueerRefuge.com is a new project dedicated to inspiring queer people to find safety, belonging, and self-determination through the lived experiences of others.
We share stories from LGBTQ+ folx who have found refuge, built community, or created a new life for themselves. Stories are presented through voiceovers paired with representative artwork and imagery.
A typical story may include:
Introduction β Who they are and the challenges they faced
"I'm Jen, a trans artist who left the United States for Tokyo."
The Challenge (optional) β A deeper look at the circumstances that led them to seek change
"This was the last straw..."
Finding Refuge β How they found safety, stability, community, or opportunity
"I obtained a student visa, moved to Tokyo, made friends, and found a thriving queer community."
Community Support (optional) β Links to personal projects, shops, mutual aid requests, crowdfunding campaigns, or other ways to support the storyteller
Our long-term vision is to grow QueerRefuge into:
A community centered on mutual aid and support
A catalog of pathways to safety, migration, and belonging
A nonprofit organization that funds queer storytellers, writers, artists, and advocates
We're currently looking for queer writers and artists to tell their stories and help others tell theirs.
